Installing Safari Windows in a VW Bus -fini
Both styles we -suggest- you dryfit first, close the windows and eyeball along the side of the Safari frames towards the seal and count how many gaps you see... ;-) Most often gaps occurs at points where the bulb part of the seal is bent in a sharp curve. It wrinkles. You may be able to reduce wrinkles by repositioning the seal slightly left or right. If this seems to work, mark that point on both the seal and an area on the window opening with your grease pencil and remove the seal. Open you tube of 3M weatherstripping adhesive and apply a small dab at 4" intervals along the top and sides. On the bottom and the bottom corners apply a small "bead" the entire length on the inside of the window opening. This is the worst wet area and the area under most tension. Find your marks and reposition the seals accordingly, close the safaris and if possible loop a pair of bungie cords (I know, I forgot to list bungies in the tools section, but, everyones got bungies) around the safari latches and hook the other ends someplace so that moderate compression is applied against the seals while the adhesive cures for an hour or so.
STEP 7. Positioning and mounting Window Latch Catch Clips
Now that you've got your Safari windows mounted snugly, fastened your window seals as best you could and attached the mounting pivot brackets you'll note your little goodies bag of parts is getting pretty empty. You should have 4 chrome-plated (or SS) angled plates and a few sheet metal screws.
Grab the plates, drill, phillips screw driver and a buddy. Have your buddy go around to the outside of the bus and press firmly with both hands at the bottom of the safari frame so that the frame squishes against the seal, but not so hard that you can't unlatch them.
"Better compression means potentially less water leakage."
Reach forward and rotate both the safari latches to their closed position and gingerly slide one of the angled plates under and behind the latch. Screw holes face the top of the dash.. ;-) Tap your screw driver gently thru both the screw holes to leave an impression for the drill bit, remove the angled plate and drill two holes where you marked. Repeat this for each of the 4 Catch Clips (angled plates) and you're finished.... Just add your one-eyed duck and rotating wiper-arm adapters and you're off with the breeze and the bugs... SMILE!
